Our Story: The History of White Whale,

began nearly 45 years ago in 1978 across the Churchill River in a spot locals call Cockles Point. This idyllic piece of land, where the sounds of beluga whales surfacing could be heard in the quiet hours of the day, and where polar bears frequently trundled by, was home to the original building of the same name. Activity at the lodge quickly took off— it initiated archaeological research into the site, and brought sustainable tourism development to Manitoba’s North. Even in its early days, White Whale Lodge was becoming a coveted tourist site rich in both cultural history and wildlife.

When the Lodge was unexpectedly lost to a fire in 2002, everyone was devastated at the news; it had been the last standing building on the western side of the Churchill River. But the next generation remembered what it was like to be on the land, and slowly began to rebuild. This proved to be no easy task; many years of planning as well as a massive relocation project when it was deemed that the original location would not be suitable for a new build. After years of dreaming that the lodge would one day reopen and invite travellers from around the world like it had once before, it did. In the new location more accessible from Churchill, but still maintaining the nature that had existed before, the spot nestled off Launch road proves to be a good choice: bears frequent the property, and the beloved White Whale that started it all, can still be seen in the distance when you turned north to face the mighty Hudson Bay.
